Estate Planning Attorney Fees
You will not find a list that shows real estate planning costs anywhere, but keep in mind that estate planning costs are determined by your specific circumstances. Some states actually allow you to do estate planning yourself to save on costs. But estate planning laws are very complex, which means only an experienced estate planning attorney can ensure there are no loopholes in your legal documents.
What Estate Planning Means
Estate planning is not reserved for rich or famous people. People who have any assets should actually be thinking about planning their estates. For example, if you have a home, you have to think about who will inherit that home after you die. Estate planning is just documents that have clear instructions about what should happen if you become incapacitated or if you die.
With estate planning you can be sure that your assets will be transferred to your spouse and children, or that you and your finances will be taken care if you are incapacitated. You can plan your estate using trusts and a Will.
What Is The Cost Of Estate Planning?
You may only have to pay $150 or $300 for a simple Will, which is reasonable if you have a small estate. However, for estate planning you may have to pay $1000 or more. There are states that offer plans for people who want to plan their estates but cannot afford it. These plans allow you to pay for estate planning services on a monthly or yearly premium.
You can calculate the cost of estate planning through the following fee types:
- Flat fee: here you pay a single fixed fee for the service. So no matter how many times you contact your attorney, the fee remains the same. Most attorneys charge fixed prices for estate planning.
- Pay per hour: Your attorney may charge you by the hour to help you draft an estate plan. An hourly rate can be $150 to $300 per hour or more. These hourly lawyer rates vary, which means that you can shop around and find a lawyer with an affordable rate.
- Consultation fee: Lawyers don’t often charge a fee for an initial consultation, but they will not divulge much information during your first telephone meeting. You may still have to pay to get more information.

You Can Save On Estate Planning Costs
Do the following to save on costs:
Lawyer personality: Use the initial free consultation to determine whether you have a personal chemistry between you and the lawyer. If your lawyer’s personality is intolerable, you may not be able to communicate freely with them about costs or your concerns.
Talk about money first: Make sure the cost of creating legal documents is the first thing you discuss with the lawyer. Talk to at least three firms about how they charge for services.
Decide what you need: Your situation is different from other people’s situations, which means there is no one size fits all estate plan. A Will may be the only document you need or maybe you need a trust together with a Will.
Remember that the time to start your estate planning is now. So, start talking to friends and family about getting an experienced estate planning lawyer.
